Location and History
Marylebone can be roughly defined as
the area bounded by Oxford Street to the south, Marylebone Road to the
north, Edgware Road to the west and Portland Place (or alternatively
Great Portland Street) to the east. A broader definition would also
include Regent's Park and the area immediately north of Marylebone
Road, containing Marylebone Station, the original site of the
Marylebone Cricket Club at Dorset Square, and the neighbourhood known
as Lisson Grove.
Today
the area is mostly residential.
Marylebone
gets its name from a church called "St Mary's" (now known as St
Marylebone Parish Church) which was built on the bank of a small stream
or "bourne", called the Tybourne, in an area named after the stream,
Tyburn. The church and the surrounding area later became known as St
Mary at the Bourne, which over time became shortened to its present
form, Marylebone.
Such
place names in the neighborhood as Cavendish Square and Portland Place
reflect the Dukes' of Portland landholdings and Georgian-era
developments there.
Borough
The
Metropolitan Borough of St Marylebone was a metropolitan borough of the
County of London between 1899 and 1965 after which it was merged with
the Metropolitan Borough of Paddington and the Metropolitan Borough of
Westminster to form the City of Westminster: http://www.westminster.gov.uk

make Marylebone a better place to live and work. Today, with nearly a
thousand members drawn from the residential and business communities it
is involved in a wide range of activities aimed focused on
improving the amenities and the environment for everyone who lives and
works in Marylebone. http://www.marylebone.org
The St Marylebone Society, the oldest amenity group in Westminster, was
formed in 1948 to help save war-damaged Nash Terraces in Regent's Park.
It continues to campaign to protect the architectural heritage and
character of St Marylebone while acknowledging and helping to manage
the pressures on an increasingly popular part of London. Westminster
City Council is required to consult the Society on planning and
licensing issues. The Society's planning committee meets monthly to
provide expert recommendations on applications affecting its area of

Our
Favourite Shops
One of London's more discreet neighbourhoods, this district between
Oxford Street and Regent's Park is where many of the capital's private
health clinics, plastic surgeons and dentists are located. However, not
everyone comes to Marylebone for a nip and tuck, the streets are also
crammed with smart shops, European-style cafes and restaurants.
Marylebone High Street is an ideal place for a leisurely stroll,
especially if you weave your way into St Christopher's Place. Away from
the busy, traffic-laden streets, this paved area is a hamlet of fashion
shops and trendy eateries. And, at the slightest glimpse of summer,
tables and chairs spill out on to the pavements for al fresco dining.
It runs sub-parallel to Baker Street
and terminates at its
northern end at the junction with the Marylebone Road. Notable shops
include the main branch of the bookseller Daunts Books and the
Scandinavian furniture retailer Skandium, in addition to the
Michelin-starred Orrery restaurant.
