Marylebone can be roughly defined as the area bounded by Oxford Street to the south, Marylebone Road to the north, Edgware Today the area is mostly residential. Marylebone gets its name from a church called "St Mary's" (now known as St Marylebone Parish Church) which was built on the bank of a small stream or "bourne", called the Tybourne, in an area named after the stream, Tyburn. The church and the surrounding area later became known as St Mary at the Bourne, which over time became shortened to its present form, Marylebone. Such place names in the neighborhood as Cavendish Square and Portland Place reflect the Dukes' of Portland landholdings and Georgian-era developments there. BoroughThe Metropolitan Borough of St Marylebone was a metropolitan borough of the County of London between 1899 and 1965 after which it was merged with the Metropolitan Borough of Paddington and the Metropolitan Borough of Westminster to form the City of Westminster: http://www.westminster.gov.uk This area guide is brought to you by Kubie Gold Associates, local Marylebone Estate Agents. Our Favourite ShopsOne of London's more discreet neighbourhoods, this district between Oxford Street and Regent's Park is where many of the capital's private health clinics, plastic surgeons and dentists are located. However, not everyone comes to Marylebone for a nip and tuck, the streets are also crammed with smart shops, European-style cafes and restaurants. Marylebone High Street is an ideal place for a leisurely stroll, especially if you weave your way into St Christopher's Place. Away from the busy, traffic-laden streets, this paved area is a hamlet of fashion shops and trendy eateries. And, at the slightest glimpse of summer, tables and chairs spill out on to the pavements for al fresco dining. It runs sub-parallel to Baker Street and terminates at its northern end at the junction with the Marylebone Road. Notable shops include the main branch of the bookseller Daunts Books and the Scandinavian furniture retailer Skandium, in addition to the Michelin-starred Orrery restaurant.
