For more than a decade Hyde Park Winter Wonderland has been bringing Christmas cheer to the capital with its extravagant mix of rollercoaster rides, street food, skating and live shows.
Winter Wonderland 2019 opened on 21 November and you can visit until 5 January 2020 – it’s open from 10am to 10pm daily, except Christmas Day. Entry is free, if you just fancy wandering around and taking in the atmosphere, but ticketed attractions and events can be booked in advance. Mornings are a good time to visit with the family and take things at a leisurely pace.
Winter Wonderland boasts more than 100 rides and a huge Christmas market – they call it Santaland. By night thousands of fairy lights transform the area into a magical space, where you can enjoy a festive mulled wine or Bavarian beer.
New attractions for 2019 include the enticing spectacle of Paddington on ice and a Mr Men and Little Miss show, for younger visitors. There’s also the world’s tallest (transportable) observation wheel and a Christmas Carol-themed kingdom of ice sculptures. Returning attractions include the UK’s largest open-air ice rink and jaw dropping acts in the Circus MegaDome.
There are plenty of options for eating and drinking, from bistro fare in the Cedar & Spruce Bar and Kitchen to the traditional Bavarian bratwurst and gluhwein that is a staple of the event. Or chill, literally, in the Ice Bar where even the chairs and tables are sculpted from ice. You can also get a group together to recreate the full après ski experience – huddled in an Alpine village ‘hutte’ for stone baked pizzas, cocktails and karaoke.
