Guide To Maida Vale Area

Location and History

This west London road is a residential area and you will find a wide choice of prime flats for sale in Maida Vale. The district covers Maida Hill along with the road of Maida Vale itself, which runs from Kilburn past Maida Vale tube station and all the way down to Edgware Road. Kilburn Park and Warwick Avenue tubes are also close by, so if you want a quick commute, then Maida Vale estate agents can show you properties close to the stations.

Interestingly, the area takes its name from the Hero of Maida, a public house that was named after Major General Sir John Stuart, who led Britain to victory in the Maida area of Italy in 1806.

The district features some stunning Edwardian mansion houses and estate agents in Maida Vale will be able to show you a variety of flats and houses from this period. The area also encompasses the Paddington Basin - a junction of three canals that is known as Little Venice. Maida Vale estate agents have many flats for sale in this beautiful part of the neighbourhood too.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Maida Vale was a predominantly Jewish district, and the area contains the 1896 Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue (a Grade II listed building) and headquarters of the British Sephardi community. The first Prime Minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, lived within sight of this synagogue on Warrington Crescent. The pioneer of modern computing, Alan Turing was born a few hundred yards further down this same road.

Its exact borders are largely a matter of opinion, but broadly speaking streets built in white stucco close to the canal qualify as being in Little Venice as opposed to Maida Vale. Blomfield Road, Maida Avenue, Westbourne Terrace Road, Howley Place, Warwick Avenue, Bristol Gardens, Clifton Villas, Clifton Gardens, Randolph Road, Randolph Crescent, Pindock Mews, and the southern reaches of Castellain Road and Randolph Avenue would all qualify on this basis.

Sellers of properties on the borders of these streets regard their addresses as being in Little Venice, while buyers tend to argue that they are in fact in Maida Vale, and thus should be cheaper. According to "Waterscape", Little Venice is technically the point where the Grand Union Canal and Regent's Canal meet, and Robert Browning viewed Little Venice as the whole area at the south of Maida Vale.

The area is one of London's prime residential areas, and it is also known for its shops and restaurants, as well as the Puppet Theatre Barge, the Cascade Floating Art Gallery, the Waterside Café and the Warwick Castle pub. It is possible to take canal tours from Little Venice eastwards around Regent's Park, past London Zoo and on towards Camden Town.

Maida Vale is in the borough of the City Of Westminster.

Local Schools

Westminster AcademyWindmill Montessori Nursery School is just a stone's throw from the famous BBC Maida Value studios. It accepts toddlers aged between two and six, adopting the Montessori educational approach which encourages psychological, physical and social independence. The school was rated as "outstanding" in its latest Ofsted inspection, after being praised for its enthusiastic staff and hands-on management team.

Paddington Academy was one of two non-selective sixth-form secondary schools opened in September 2006 to replace North Westminster Community School, closed down by the government due to poor results. The academy took a few years to improve on North Westminster Community School's poor GCSE results, but the graduating class of 2011 - the first which spent all five years learning at the school - achieved some incredible results. Ninety-nine per cent of them left with at least five A* to C grades and the school was subsequently as the fourth best in the country. In 2013, they managed to eclipse this incredible record, with every single student achieving at least five A* to C grades.

Westminster Academy was the other sixth-form secondary school created to replace North Westminster Community. The school also showed fantastic improvements and high GCSE pass rates. It was rated 'Outstanding' by Ofsted and last year 100 per cent of their sixth-form students were offered University places. It also boasts above average results for students taking the international baccalaureate diploma.
