Marylebone Celebrities Past & Present

This trendy part of London has been home to many famous faces over the years, and the history, style and charm of this part of London continues to draw in the world’s most glamorous residents. Many celebs have retained a home in Marylebone, while others have stayed but a short time in this fashionable postcode. Either way, there’s no denying that a house in Marylebone comes with some of the most enviable neighbours imaginable.

Famous past residents

Romantic poet Lord Byron was born in Marylebone, and baptized in St Marylebone Parish Church. Although he spent much of his adulthood abroad, his remarkable life began in this part of London. Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson also lived here, and his daughter Horatia was baptized in the same church as Byron.

Charles Dickens lived in 1 Devonshire Terrace, a building that was demolished in the 1950s. A commemorative plaque lies on the walls of the office building that took its place. Literary figures have long been drawn to the area, as poet TS Eliot lived on Crawford Street, too.

Arguably some of the most famous residents of all time are the Fab Four. Paul McCartney wrote “Yesterday” whilst living at 57 Wimpole Street, and Ringo Starr was also a Marylebone resident, as were John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The couple shared two floors of a house, 34 Montagu Square, in 1968. And who was the former resident before they moved in? None other than Jimi Hendrix. The now infamous nude album cover for Two Virgins was shot here, and John also worked on The Beatles’ White Album whilst living here. In the month that John would have turned 70, Yoko joined English Heritage in unveiling a blue plaque to mark the house as a historic site of interest, which can still be seen today.

Today’s famous faces

Even present day celebrities can’t get enough of property in Marylebone.

Movie star Sienna Miller was once a resident before moving to New York, taking up residence on Hatton Row in St John’s Wood. She put the two-bedroom property on the market in 2009 for an asking price of £995,000.

Musicians have also flocked to the area, with Noel Gallagher buying a house here, and visiting the bookshop Daunt Books “every couple of weeks.” During her marriage to film director Guy Ritchie, Madonna had several properties in central London, including a home on Conway Street, Regent’s Park.

Marylebone is also home to many celebrity haunts and hangouts. The Chiltern Firehouse, located in the heart of NW1, entertained the likes of David Beckham, Nigella Lawson, Harry Styles, Jimmy Carr and John Cleese last year, with the waiting list for a table topping six months! Exclusive designer shopping, bars, and private members clubs also make Marylebone a mecca for the world’s rich and famous.
